about

So, in 1991, we were able to finagle the use of Shryock Auditorium. Since we were SIU students, we made a request to use the auditorium for a musical performance, and the University said, sure. We contacted Robbie Stokes, sound production man extradordinaire, and recorded a live, one take, mikes in the room recording (we couldn't afford the studio time to do a mix down of individual tracks, so we basically got a live mix of the room and the board.

During this session, I learned that my wife can't play tambourine.

We called this record Tim Our Leader, because when we did a thorough cleaning of the basement at 120 South Forest, we found a framed picture of this guy, who we named Tim, and dedicated the remaining three months of our career as the Coolies to following his commands. His first and only command: Record as much shit as possible.

Not long after, they were playing out. Brian was a song engine, and before we split in 1991, we had written about 100 songs, and played all over the country. People from around the Dale still ask about us every once in awhile. ... more
